Why Do You Need Microdermabrasion or Chemical Peels?

Sun exposure, acne or just getting older can leave your skin tone and texture uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred. If you want your skin to look smoother and younger, consider a chemical peel, which uses a chemical solution to smooth the texture of the skin by removing the damaged outer layers. If you are looking for a quick exfoliation and instantly brighter skin with no downtime, consider microdermabrasion. Or even a combination of the two for best results!

microdermabrasion denverThis results-driven facial treatment uses a combination of mechanical exfoliation (microdermabrasion) and chemical exfoliation to brighten, smooth and clear the skin. This signature treatment is best for those looking to get the glow back to their skin and is the best maintenance facial for those in their 30’s and 40’s. It is also great for acne-prone and oily skin types.  Microdermabrasion is performed first and then the chemical peel best for your skin is applied to the skin. For a no downtime treatment, a Glycolic or AHA Peel is used. For a deeper exfoliation, a Jessners, TCA or Acne Peel is used. If one of these peels is used the skin will be flaky for 3-5 days. There is no redness or swelling with treatment.

See below for more details on these two types of therapies.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, no downtime procedure that uses mechanical exfoliation to remove the stratum corneum (protective barrier) and dead skin cells from the face, neck, chest and back. This allows new, healthier skin cells to surface and leaves the skin with a fresher, glowing look. After just one treatment, the skin is noticeably smoother!

The term “microdermabrasion” refers to a technology developed in Italy in the mid-1980’s. It achieved wide popularity in Europe before being introduced in the United States in the mid 1990’s. It was originally used by dermatologists, but soon was used by estheticians as well.  At Natural Skincare Clinic, we use a diamond tip microdermabrasion machine to both exfoliate and polish the skin in one treatment. The diamond tip machine has become the gold standard in microderm because it is more comfortable than traditional microderm which used crystals that were blasted onto the skin and because it is less messy.

As one of the most requested services in the last few years, microderm has really gained popularity and has become a mainstream treatment for basic facial care. We believe that in order for a facial to be great and get long lasting results the skin must be properly prepared, just like sanding down a piece of wood before you stain it.

We strongly recommend making a microdermabrasion part of your regular facial routine and offer this as the Microdermabrasion with Organic Facial. Microderm is a maintenance treatment that can be done every 2-8 weeks depending on your skin type. Best results will be seen when paired with a facial or chemical peel.

Chemical Peels

chemical peels DenverA chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of the the skin. Although chemical peels are used mostly on the face, they can also be used to improve the skin on your neck, back, hands and chest. Chemical peels can be used to improve:

Acne or acne scars
Age spots
Fine lines and wrinkles
Irregular skin pigmentation
Rough skin and scaly patches
Sun-damaged skin

Types of Chemical Peels

We offer a full range of AHA, Salicylic, Glycolic, Mandelic, Jessners and TCA peels.  The immediate effect is increased circulation, which improves the skin’s texture and color.  The benefit from a series of treatments include refined pore size, diminishing fine lines and scars, more even skin tone and softening of deep lines.  The benefits to acne-prone complexions are the most dramatic.

More About The Types of Peels

Alpha Hydroxy Acid Peels (AHA’s)

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) are chemical peel acids that are naturally derived from food products. The most commonly seen AHA’s are: glycolic (the most popular), lactic, citric, malic, and tartaric acid. Glycolic is derived from sugar cane, lactic from sour milk, citric from citrus fruits, malic from apples and tartaric from grape wine. Of these AHA’s, glycolic acid is the most common due to its’ small molecular size and ability to penetrate the skin most easily. Mandelic acid is another AHA that is currently not as popular and is “up and coming”. Mandelic is derived from almonds and is a fantastic AHA to use on non-cystic acneic skin. AHA peels are chemically structured so as to only penetrate the top layer of the skin. They do not have the proper molecular structure to penetrate into the living cell layers, making these peels perfect for daily use and for a quick, no downtime skin brightening.

AHA peels are indicated for treatment of dull, dry skin, mild acne, uneven texture and daily exfoliation.

AHA peels are not indicated for treating wrinkles, sagging skin or moderate to severe acne. AHA peels are solely for the use of maintenance not correction.

Glycolic Facial Peels

The 30-50% medical-grade Glycolic acid facial peels are the lightest of the peels offered at Natural Skincare Clinic. This light, superficial peel is perfect for smoothing skin texture, brightening dull skin, treating dry areas, controlling minor acne and clogged pores. The Glycolic facial peel works by penetrating the top (dead) layer of the skin and dissolving the glue that traps these cells on the skin’s surface causing a dull, rough appearance. After the glycolic acid dissolves these dead skin cells, the skin is instantly brighter and smoother to the touch.

Jessner’s Peel

The Jessner’s Peel is deeper than an AHA or Salicylic peel and formulated to remove superficial layers of skin. This medium-depth peel is a blended solution of Resorcinol, 14% Lactic Acid and 14% Salicylic Acid which results in a deeper penetration and significant exfoliation of the top layer of skin cells. This is a semi-strong peel that is known for delivering great results. Unlike a glycolic peel which has no downtime, the Jessner’s Peel will produce a noticeable light, flakey “peel” to the skin. And unlike a TCA Peel, the skin will not crust or be red, just flakey, dry skin for 2-4 days. Keep in mind it takes two days for the flaking to begin so it is a 4-6 day process in total. Within a week, the old skin layers will have shed to reveal a smoother, glowing, healthier layer of new skin.

The Jessner’s Peel is indicated for lightening hyperpigmentation, treating active acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne lesions, as well as sun damaged and aging skin. In general, aging and acneic skin do great with Jessner’s Peels. This peel can be used on the face, neck, chest, hands and back. The Jessner’s Peel can also be used on all skin types safely.

When using the Jessner’s Peel as a corrective treatment for acne, sun damage or aging skin, it is a progressive treatment and will not provide final results after one session. Generally, 3-6 treatments will be needed every 3-4 weeks, depending on the condition of ones’ skin.

At Natural Skincare Clinic, getting regular (every 6-8 weeks) Microdermabrasion and Jessner’s Peel combination treatments, has proven to be one of the best preventative treatments one can do in the office to slow down the aging process and keep hyperpigmentation at bay.

TCA Peel

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is a medium to deep-depth peel agent that ranges in concentration from 20-50%. As the concentration increases, the depth of penetration increases accordingly. At Natural Skincare Clinic, a 20% solution is used because it is the safest and most consistent concentration. With higher concentrations there is increased risk of hyperpigmenting the skin.

The TCA Peel is indicated for hyperpigmentation, sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles and dull, sallow skin. It is one of the best anti-aging peels on the market today. This peel can be used on the face, neck, chest and back of the hands. The TCA Peel can be used only on lighter skin tones and is contraindicated for darker skin types.

Blended TCA Peels

10% TCA & Lactic Blend ($75 or Buy 5 Get 1 FREE)

These TCA blends are gently yet highly effective and address skin conditions such as rosacea, hyperpigmentation and skin flushing with the downtime and discomfort of traditional TCA peels.

The 10% TCA and Lactic Acid is a unique blend of peel that was formulated for sensitive and higher fitzpatrick (darker) skin types. This blend contains a 10% TCA that helps brighten, improve the skin’s texture, diminish redness (rosacea) as well as lightenSensi before and after hyperpigmentation. This multi-faceted peel also provides anti-acne, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial benefits. Low concentrations of TCA is an excellent choice for calming rosacea as the skin will be noticeably less red and inflamed.

There is no downtime, however the peel does need to be slept in and there will be 2-4 days of flaky, sloughing skin. Please note, for severe skin conditions, a series of treatments is needed to see significant improvement.
